we are bringing you another broadcast tonight from newtown, connecticut. a town where many students returned to school today. schools reopened with the exception, of course, of sandy hook elementary. the school that is now a crime scene. the students will go back to school after the holidays in a different building eight mile away with 20 bright young faces missing from the halls and the classrooms. everything is different now. the children in this town are facing a new reality. doing things they never should have to do at this young age, like writing goodbye letters to their friends. 6-year-old jack pinto was buried yesterday. the funeral, a note from his friend john reads, jack, you're my best friend. we had fun together. i will miss you. i will talk to you in my prayers. i love you, jack. love john. there were two more funerals today for two more 6-year-olds. jess they were laid to rest today. we will remember them tonight and honor them tonight. our hearts and our thoughts are with their families and their friends and we wish peace and strength to all

newtown, you are not alone. >> they are not. so many strangers have reached out to this broken community, including some volunteers who drove here from the midwest with their therapy dogs. i've said before that words can seem so small at times like this. and there are no words, really. and that's what is so great about dogs. here is gary tuchman. >> reporter: nine golden retrievers on the march, making their way into a recreation center in newtown, connecticut, for an emotional rescue to help comfort the children who survived the attack at sandy hook elementary and other children in town. therapeutic canines are sponsored and trained by lutheran church charities, transported in a van for a 900-mile ride from illinois. >> let me give you a quick introduction to the dogs here. this is chewy. this is ruthie, abby, prince, luther. >> maggie. >> maggie. hanna. >> barney. >> barney, and? >> shammy. >> these are the comfort dogs. >> reporter: what is a comfort dog? >> a comfort dog is one who brings comfort to other people when they're

the high school i was at in newtown, three police cars. the students say it made them feel better. >> it's still impossible to imagine. appreciate the reporting. thank you very much. it's been particularly difficult, obviously, for students to go back to school. dr. david schoenfeld is a crisis counselor who gave a presentation to teachers in newtown on how to talk to children. he's the director of the national crisis and bereavement. he joins me now right now live. thank you for being with us. >> thank you. >> you met with teachers. administrators, all employees of the school. what is your message to them? >> well, there are a couple messages i want to get across. the first is to recognize how heroic it is to be able to help students in a time like this. we have to remember all of the staff. they're grieving some of their own members of the staff. they're definitely grieving the loss of the children they were close to. that they care about. they're also impacted by it. the first thing is to recognize what they're doing and how courageous

there could be more related to newtown. the u.s. attorney's office in connecticut and the fbi are being very aggressive trying to track more of these, and nothing specific, they are telling us, but this arrest today which could end with a five-year prison sentence is to be a warning of anyone who is trying to take advantage of the tragedy and these suffering families. >> a warning that we certainly hope is true. drushgs thank you very much. >>> ken berger is the president and ceo of charity navigator, a nonprofit that investigated -- evaluates charities and he joins me live. the details, you were listening there, so disturbing. have you ever seen anything like this? >> unfortunately, we have seen situations like this. and i think any time there's a tragedy, unfortunately some really awful people come out and exploit the public. it's really horrible. i mean, this is one of the worst i have seen. it's pretty horrific to say the least, but there are low things people are doing out there when it comes to many of these kinds of tragedies
